A local Hmong veteran is supporting a bill that would allow those who fought along U.S. troops in the Vietnam War to be buried as veterans in national cemeteries.

A California Congressman introduced the legislation. It gives Hmong soldiers the opportunity to be buried in cemeteries like Arlington.

Supporters believe it would be a way to honor their service to the nation.

"I'm very happy to hear that because we fought a long time to help the United States to protect from the communist invasion in Southeast Asia," says Xeng Xiong. "So if the United States recognizes the Hmong people, we would like to have that bill to pass."

More than 1,200 Hmong Vietnam veterans live in Wisconsin. Nearly 7,000 live in the U.S.
